BMWEC is conducting a pilot project with the Thai Ministry of Education for the proper recognition of Migrant Education. This project involves providing accreditation to migrant schools by the government. We have come far, but the process is very long and we started only two years ago.

We are still only half way and need much more international support to succeed. Advocacy and awareness is a necessity for the schools, which are still illegal, to be able to run.

Achievements and goals

BMWEC goal is to give give training, bear qualified teachers, and arrange vocational programs involving computers, art, music, and sports. Graduates of tenth grade will be given access to post-ten schools such as FSP, EIP, TPC, SEP, VT and ICFC which programs currently found in refugee camps. In addition to increase office internship opportunities within organizations along the Thai-Burma border.

BMWEC is associated with Consortium, World Education, Human Rights Education Institute of Burma (HREIB), National Health and Education Committee (NHEC), Drum Publication, Taipei Overseas Peace Service (TOPS), Mae Toe Clinic, and Thai Public Health. These groups help BMWEC to provide school supplies and other services, such as training of teachers for migrant schools and other schools along the border.

As of this year, the Thai government has authorized migrant schools to exist in Thailand as along as they teach Thai language classes. The Thai government has promised to provide for the salaries of the Thai teachers, but the government has yet to allocate money to these migrant schools. Therefore, the schools are all struggling to live up to this requirement to provide Thai classes. SSC has been trying to help the schools inside Burma more specially schools in Karen state with all the possibilities as well.
